NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO & CCO: Yuko Sasahara; hereinafter, “NDV”) is pleased to announce that, through a fund that it manages, it has invested in New Space Intelligence, Inc. (Headquarters: Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture; President and CEO: Yumiko Nagai; hereinafter “New Space Intelligence”), a company that develops a data platform to convert satellite data from around the world into a format usable by society, based on its proprietary calibration and integration technology that prepares data from different satellites for comparison and integration.
In recent years, against the backdrop of aging social infrastructure, increasingly severe natural disasters, and the need to address environmental changes, the use of satellite data, which enables continuous monitoring of conditions across wide areas and has the potential to significantly reduce the time, cost, and effort involved compared to conventional monitoring methods, has gained widespread traction. However, because satellite data varies between satellites in terms of sensor type, resolution, and observation conditions, it has been difficult to compare and integrate different sets of satellite data as-is, making it challenging to “use the data continuously, with the necessary accuracy, whenever needed.” This had been a major challenge in advancing the practical application of satellite data.
New Space Intelligence enables the cross-domain utilization of satellite data by using its proprietary calibration and integration technology to align data from multiple satellites so that it can be handled using a common frame of reference. This means that users of satellite data will be able to combine the most suitable paid and free satellite data to meet their needs, allowing the continuous use of satellite data at a lower cost, with the required accuracy, whenever needed. Through its satellite data platform, New Space Intelligence promotes the use of satellite data across a wide range of fields. These include the monitoring of social infrastructure such as railways, roads, and power grids; disaster damage analysis; monitoring of illegal dumping; and land use analysis.
The NTT Group is working across its member companies to fully leverage the potential of the space industry and business, striving to create new services and address global challenges such as climate change. We will use this investment as an opportunity to enhance our collaboration with New Space Intelligence and work together toward achieving these goals.
